Dr. Joyce O’Mahony taught in TRU's nursing program since 2013. Her nursing career of 45 years began in acute-care settings, and over time shifted toward community health care as a public health nurse, nursing instructor, manager and influential researcher. Her Master of Nursing and PhD from the University of Calgary focused on immigrant women’s mental health, a passion that has remained central to her research at TRU alongside health-care access and culturally safe care. O’Mahony held grants from the CIHR, the Michael Smith Foundation and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. Her multi-year study exploring how Syrian refugee mothers access social supports and interact with health care has contributed important knowledge, built trust and furthered social change. Her collaborative spirit and willingness to share her expertise have been invaluable in fostering a culture of academic excellence. Her ability to inspire, engage and empower students to do their best is truly commendable.
